Sometimes, you need an attorney to fight termites

Termites could be gnawing at your home – your biggest investment – and you don't even know it. They create billions of dollars of damage to homes in Alabama and throughout the United States each year.

Termites typically are drawn to wood, but they also can reach other parts of your home, such as the insulation. You might not see the telltale signs of termite infestation because they are hidden behind the insulation, walls or flooring. Other times, you might find swarms of winged insects come into your home, particularly in the spring or what are called mud tubes that termites build for shelter.

When you buy or sell a home, a termite inspection normally will be done and that often is when termites are discovered.

Even the most experienced do-it-yourselfer at tasks around the home shouldn't try to treat termites on their own because of the specialization required to do so. But just how do you know which professional to hire?

Any company you choose should be approved by the Alabama Department of Agriculture. A company's membership in the National Pest Management Association shows it has access to up-to-date training information. As you consider companies to hire, ask more than how much they charge.

  • How will they treat your home?
  • What is their warranty?
  • If the termites come back, will the company charge for retreatment?
  • How experienced are the technicians doing the work?
  • Can they supply local references?

Remember that termite damage occurs over time. The damage you have today won't expand much in the next month, so take your time to interview companies and find the one that has a treatment type and policies that make you comfortable. Don't succumb to high-pressure sales tactics.

If the creatures haunting your home haven't disappeared, it doesn't necessarily mean you've spent money for an unsuccessful treatment. Depending on the treatment, it could take time to control the termites.

Still, there are cases of failure. This treatment is expensive, and if the company you hired has failed you, you do have legal recourse. An attorney experienced with termite work can inform you of your options.
